June 2016 RECAP // A couple events and book progress!

Another month of reading! And I read some fantastic books 🙂

Life is not going to be especially productive for me until school starts up again… But a couple things happened. I got my campus housing contract the other day, but I realize how expensive it is to live on campus… I mean, it’s not bad, but over $700 with roommates…? I could get a better single place for that, I’m sure. So I’m looking into other places off campus, but I also really need a car to do that… But a friend also says I can stay with her and her hubby until my own place so I can focus on a car first. Ugh, life.

Life, sometimes.

The big, best event, though, was my mum’s wedding! Continue reading June 2016 RECAP // A couple events and book progress!

Golden Son (Red Rising #2) // Action-Packed Gut Puncher in Space!

golden son by pierce brownAuthor: Pierce Brown

Published: January 6th, 2016 by Del Rey

Pages: 430

Genres: young adult // science-fiction > dystopian // slight romance

Holy shit, that was awesome. Awesome in the politics & war & Darrow being a badass department. Not as heavily in the character development department. Darrow is thrown into the deep waters of civil war and political battles, betrayals and death in this second installment. He is such an intelligent, adaptive person. You can’t see plots until they are happening in front of you, even Darrow’s. I’ve been hearing amazing things about the next book and its ending, so I can’t wait to get there after the ending to this one! Ugh, that ending. WHAT A CLIFFHANGER. My poor Darrow just needs a break! Continue reading Golden Son (Red Rising #2) // Action-Packed Gut Puncher in Space!

Beneath the Stain // Drugs & Music & Angsty Love

beneath the stain coverAuthor: Amy Lane

Published: October 17th, 2014 by Dreamspinner Press

Pages: 350

Genres: m/m romance // contemporary

*this book contains sexual content and drug use*

The second half of the title says it all, folks. I was looking for something good that could be emotional because I truly enjoy finding books that punch my heart so hard (*cough* masochist? *cough cough*). This didn’t quite hit that high, but it had its emotional areas.  AND ANGST. DRAMA. Some fantastic characters, too. And the music/band element was meshed into this so well. Let’s talk a little deeper about all this. Continue reading Beneath the Stain // Drugs & Music & Angsty Love

Me Before You // This is Why I Don’t Read Much Contemporary Stuff!

me before you coverAuthor: Jojo Moyes

Published: December 31st 2012 by Pamela Dorman Books/Viking

Pages: 481

Genre: adult // romance // contemporary

I am not a romantic person. Not even close. I don’t try looking for mushy-gushy love stories. I was really hoping this wouldn’t end up that way once I decided to read it. However, the reason I did decide to try this out is because I had never read a book with a physically disabled main character, so I was curious about the representation and how this would play out. I don’t know if that seems harsh in any way (please don’t take it that way), but it’s much like people reading LGBT books to see how they may be represented, right? Plus, the blurb hinted at secrets and I like secrets.

So I was wary, but I found a pleasant surprise! And I just happened to read it the same year a movie released! Hadn’t even known until after I finished the book. (DAENERYS IS LOU.) Continue reading Me Before You // This is Why I Don’t Read Much Contemporary Stuff!

The Get to Know Me Tag!

Hello, worms (of books)!

I saw this tag on a blog I follow – Fridays and Books – and with the invitation for anyone to do it, I decided to share my own answers! I like getting to know bloggers a little better, so I like to share a little about myself, too. Perfect opportunity, eh?

STATS…

Name: I’m going to stick with my alias, still… Otherwise an alias would be pointless… So just call me Aralyn!

Nicknames: My real name isn’t worthy enough for a nickname. It’s too basic. But I never minded!

Birthday: January 7th!

Star Sign: Capricorn. I am a goat/fish creature!

Occupation: College student – one more year! And then I have no idea what I’m going to do with my life… Continue reading The Get to Know Me Tag!

MINI Reviews #2 // M/M Novels

Hey, another MINI review session!

This time, it’s for M/M novels, M/M romance more specifically. A couple of these, I read earlier this year, so because of my horrendous memory due to an influx of words from so many freaking books, I am giving them MINI reviews! The other 2 are just light reads, so I included them (and I will admit my memory can be short sometimes, too…). They aren’t in any certain order, not by rating, alphabet, nothin’. Sorry! I just wanted to share these, so I’m throwing them together and at you with this! This session includes Shattered Glass by Dani Alexander, Tournament of Losers by Megan Derr, Brute by Kim Fielding, and The Gravedigger’s Brawl by Abigail Roux. Welp, let’s get started!

*these books contain sexual content*

The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle #1) // Magic and Adventure Waiting to be Discovered

the raven boys coverAuthor: Maggie Stiefvater

Published: September 18, 2012 by Scholastic Press

Pages: 409

Genres: young adult // mystery // supernatural

Hey there, worms (of books)!

Okay. I’m late to the party, I know! I am just now reading The Raven Cycle, but sometimes with books I think I will enjoy, I like to wait until all books are available…bookworms are impatient worms. Though, I have a secret… I did read this book a few years ago… BUT I forgot, literally, everything that had happened aside from names of MCs, so it was like reading new all over again and I have plans for books I choose to re-read later, but for now! I just wanted to pretend I hadn’t read it in preparation for the finale. And I can’t wait to continue!

Read this if you like:

  • awesome characters with distinct personalities and a penchant for mischief & adventure
  • mystery & suspense
  • MAGIC (or at least the hint of a lot in this book)
  • sleeping, centuries-old kings
  • camaros
  • ravens

New Thing! // TOP TEN TUESDAY

Hey there, worms (of books)!

So I notice lots of people doing Top Ten Tuesday posts on their book blogs and wondered where that was coming from! I figured it out! It’s a weekly meme from Broke and Bookish. And I decided I’d like to try it. I know I won’t be able to participate in all of them due to not having experience in the topic or some such. But this one, I can do! This week’s theme is Top Ten Most Anticipated Releases For The Second Half Of The Year.

These are some books I’m really looking forward to trying! They aren’t in any particular order, so it’s not most anticipated to least or anything.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

Oh, my gosh, so Laini Taylor writes and creates such wonderful tales. Now, I have only read Blackbringer and the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series from her, but I loved them. I read the prologue for this and it is beautiful. So I’m really curious what this book contains and can’t wait to read it! Gah.

Writing // It doesn’t quite have a name yet…

I made this relatively recently, when I decided I wanted to try writing. I’m not extremely creative (yet?). The little writing I have done so far has been from the eyes of characters created in my head. But I thought I would share something I was a little more proud of. I always love constructive criticism and discussions, so feel free to give any advice if you see something I could alter! For instance, I don’t know if my beginning is too abrupt? If maybe I should have a line or 2 before it…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am no garden to be trimmed and molded.
I am a forest to be wild and free.
I am not made of docile flower beds.
I am made of wildly growing vines.
I am not made of binding walls.
I am made of trees, stretching branches however far.
If you want to discover the facets of this forest,
If you want to cherish the life of this forest.
Then my sunlit paths will welcome and protect you.
If you want to destroy the heart of this forest,
If you want to tame the growth of this forest,
Then my dark brambles will tangle and tear you down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Creating this, I just want it to be remembered that everyone is their own strong individual selves. No one can change them unless they let them. No one can be controlled unless they allow it. No one can be tamed unless they want someone taming them. And they will always be strong for it, in their own ways, deep in their forests.

A short post that I just wanted to share. Ta-ta for now!

The Song of Achilles // A Beautiful Take on an Old Tale

Author: Madeline Miller

Published: September 20th, 2011 by Bloomsbury Publishing

Pages: 352

Genres: young adult // LGBT // historical fiction > Greek mythology

A beautifully written perspective on the love between Achilles and Patroclus in the old Greek tales. If you know anything about the Iliad or at least seen the movie Troy, you’ll know the story of Achilles. Many people are required to learn about him in high school. But a good friend of his usually seems put off more to the side except for his effect near the end. Well, welcome to a different perception of that strong relationship here in this book! I’m surprised the story from this POV hasn’t been done, so far, what with the beautiful relationship. Continue reading The Song of Achilles // A Beautiful Take on an Old Tale
